Feminist Critism

Posted by Mani;) on February 10, 2014 at 12:55 AM Comments comments (0)

This article is basically talking about women rights. It talked about how the definition of feminism varies. One definition the article gave us was the belief that women and men should have equal rights and opportunities for self expression. The article also talked about how diverse feminism is and I could tell because of how dominant men are in some countries. In patriarchal societies women thoughts really does not matter because men dominants them. It also talked about how the feminist critic approaches an artifact and go through a four step process.

Gender roles play a big role in this. The article states that as kids parents give girls and boys different toys, decorate their rooms different colors, assign different household chores according to the sex of the children. Growing up I had an older sister and a younger brother. My brother would always take out the trash and either my sister or I would wash the dishes or clean up the bathroom area. Feminist criticism usually analyzes femininity and masculinity, as said in the article. I think it is because although it should be equal rights it’s a lot of things that men can do that women can‘t do and vice versa.

Overall, this was a great article because it pointed out a lot of key facts that defined feminism. Women has come a long way rights wise. It was a period in life when women couldn’t even vote. Women traditionally were stay at home parents. Their role was to nurse the children at home, clean, and have meals prepared.

Writing Across Cultures

This article was very interesting. I found it more interesting when I realized that it was written by my very own writing professor and others. It talked about how to develop strategies that will enhance your writing skills. It also talked about how people from different cultures write and how the change of their environment influence the way they write. I believe this comes from them forcing translation. The article mostly talked about teaching English writing skills in the English language.

In this article, it talked about how papers that is written from different people in different cultures could have the same topic or moral, but can be worded completely different. It can have the same interpretation, however it is completely written differently. One point mentioned in the article that I liked was when they talked about reader responsibilities. They said that as a reader, it is your responsibility to understand the point that the author is trying to get across. The article also gave examples of different writing pieces and then compared them.

I liked this article because I could see where the authors are coming from just by doing the peer reviews in class. The international students worded their sentences different from the way I would have worded mine. However, I could still understand the point that they were trying to make. I could piece together the things that I read. Overall, it was a good writing piece and very thoughtful because it’s something that I always thought about but never thought it would be written by professors.

This Article is talking about the way we interpret things. It discusses the way people see different things. The author talked about how important reading is to them and I agree with the author about this. Reading and understanding it is very important because it’s something that goes on in everyday life.

The author made numerous connections of his life and reading books. He stated how he knew he could read at the age of four. He said that he would look at the pictures and kind of piece together what the words that followed it said. He knew already that he had the intellect to interpret things based off the pictures.

I liked this article because I totally agree 100% with the author. Reading and interpreting things are so important. Without this type of knowledge you wouldn’t make it far in life when it comes to the real world.

From a Gym Class Game to Bright Lights and Fame

This paper was summarizing the game of basketball up. It talked about the history of basketball and how the sport became the sport that it is today and how it changed overtime. It talked about how the originally game didn’t have referees and how it started off at the YMCA center. It discussed some things that the author had an issue with about the game.

This paper discussed how basketball became popular in schools, mainly colleges for women and men. In the first paragraph or so the writer was telling us about the man who created the game when he had some boys for gym class. I bet he never thought that the game would be as popular as it is now. It seems as if the majority of our entertainment comes from watching college basketball and the NBA.

I liked this article because I liked learning about the history of sports, especially basketball. I love how basketball influences a lot of young people. For a lot of people basketball is a way to peace and have the mind clear of a lot of challenges.

American Food Culture: What is Eating America?

Posted by Mani;) on January 26, 2014 at 6:10 PM Comments comments (0)

This article is basically about the true definition of American food. It talks about how in the early 1900’s highways were starting to come about and so was fast food restaurants such as McDonald’s. This was convenient because this was around the time of the baby boomer and a lot of families were too busy to cook meals. It also talked about how immigrants were coming over to the America’s bringing their customs and traditional foods along with them.

According to the article, it talks about how American food used to consist of farming, however, we don’t farm as much as we used to. Americans sometimes don’t look at food as a way to satisfy your taste buds, according to the article, it says that we use it as a form of entertainment like going on dates, and catching up on old times with friends. It also talked about the vendors at sporting events that walk around selling food. All of this is part of the American culture. This also includes going to the movies and buying popcorn which is traditional in the American culture.

I like the article overall because I always wanted to know the true definition of American food. I see a lot of restaurants that say “Chinese Food” or “Italian Food or “Mexican Food” so what is really American food? I think a mixture of all of these contributes to American food because we all eat it in our everyday lives.

The American Model of Perception and Thinking

Posted by Mani;) on January 22, 2014 at 12:20 AM Comments comments (0)

To sum it up, this article is basically talking about how people see the same thing however, they get a different interpretation about it. In this case it’s talking about races and cultures and how we view them differently. Specifically the words we use, and I think that this comes from the translations because when we translate something from Spanish to English, its worded different. An English person might Spanish is backwards as to where a Spanish person might say English is backwards.

The article talked about how blue and green come off to have different meanings in the English language. For instance, I could say someone was feeling blue which means they are feeling sad. To a person who does not understand English well would probably wonder why someone would be feeling like a color. The article also said how Americans main focus is to get things done, the thoughts of Americans exist in an external world and not inside of the mind.

My feelings towards this article is neutral. I’m neutral because I don’t like how they categorized all the races as one. What if all people of the same race didn’t think alike? Then what, we have false evidence. Then when I thought about the “Majority Rules” quote I figured out that the majority of the race must interpret things that why.

Doing Rhetorical Critcism

The literature piece, Doing Rhetorical Criticism is more of the less talking about how to critique a piece of writing the correct way. It gave us four different ways on how to go about doing this. Not only did this article discuss ways to criticize a paper but it also informed you on how to write a paper and it gave the readers numerous of components that should be included in the paper that a person is writing. It was very detailed in stated the points that they were improvising. After reading this, I now have a more precise understanding on how to do constructive criticism on any of my peers’ literature pieces. The author also talked about finding an artifact in the literature piece and then analyzing it.

When the author talked about the 5 components that should be in a literature piece was very informing. Especially when he talked about finding an artifact. I, personally believe that he did a good job on explaining it because it was very helpful to the point as to where I could easily write a paper. I have a better understanding on critique a piece of literature in a respectable, yet informing way. The way that the author went about explaining things were beyond intriguing. After reading each paragraph you would have had a descriptive explanation on each topic that was covered.

I can say that the article didn’t come off to be the best thing to read, however, it was very informative. It covered a lot of information that could help a lot of us become excellent writers and critiques. Even though you have to read more than the first page to understand how much information that this piece contained. I’m happy that I read it because it will indeed help me in the near future.

President Obama's Response

Posted by Mani;) on January 13, 2014 at 1:50 PM Comments comments (0)

President Barack Obama’s speech was very intriguing in many ways. He pointed out numerous of facts about bettering American. More of the less President Obama discussed things such as the military and how other countries view America vice versa the actual America and how it should be view. He stated that there should be no such thing as Asian America, White America, Black America, and the list could go on. He said that we are all pledging the same allegiance and I feel that we should be considered as people and not distinguished by our race. President Obama main point of this speech was to inform the citizens about how he wanted America to be viewed from foreigners and also the things we need to change and enhance as Americans.

One point that stood out to me is when President Obama stated “We can’t say that a black youth with a book is acting white.” It stood out because where I went to school at the students would say that I was acting white because I was very proper and precise with the things I did. I didn’t know that being proper to some people was considered “white.” Not to mention when President Obama was talking about education. He discussed that you didn’t need a fancy education to be successful meaning you don’t have to come from the richest family to achieve potential. He said “Parents who have to compete with their children for $7.50 per hour.” This goes back to when he talked about people who have the intellect but can’t go to college because they can’t afford it.

Overall, I think this was a fascinating speech because I liked the things he talked about such ass changing our nation. I engaged when he talked about how inner city people think that the government can’t teach their kids how to learn. To me, this is true on so many levels because I went to inner city schools and it’s always distractions in the classrooms. Most children have to develop intellect skills on their own. I think that President Obama’s thoughts about war is beneficial to the soldiers and also their families. His thoughts are that a war should never be the first option if there are not enough troops that are goin
